The weather was unkind to the first of our Welsh Masters League matches of 2008 held at Newport on June 18th, there was a good attendance with ten teams competing for the Men’s and Ladies Cups.
Newport dominated the Men’s Match contesting every event on the track and field , amassing nearly 350 points in the process partially due to them eclipsing a weakened Rhondda in the throwing events which is a first for any Club.
On the track Richard Ledger (Swansea) and Glyn Sutton (Newport) both ran good times in the short sprint, over the longer sprint it was Newport athletes Brett Davies and Malcolm Medhurst dominating the event. Sean Price (Rhondda) and Phil Crane (Neath) & Brett ran well in a very tactical 800m race with Bilal Namani (Rhondda) finishing well ahead in the older age group race.
In the distance race of the evening Peter Crane (Neath) Darryn Macattee (Newport) and Mick Tabor (Les/Croups) all ran well in their age groups.
In the field Richard Ledger (Swansea) Derek Osborne (Brecon) and Geoff Miller (Newport) took the honours in the long jump, as did Derek, Geoff and Peter Roberts (Swansea) in the high jump. It was in the throwing events that Newport gained more points than in previous years with Rhondda fielding a very weakened team due to injury and retirement and Cardiff with a non existence team they took full advantage with Robert Eales, Geoff Miller and Glynn Sutton all scoring well, opposition came from Peter Roberts (Swansea) Barry Barnfield (Rhondda) and John Davies (Port Talbot).
In the Ladies match Rhondda were too strong for the rest particularly in the field events. On the track Sian Davies (Swansea) and Sue Hooper (Cardiff) ran well over the short distances with newcomer Satu Hankala (Brecon) and Anne Follan (Rhondda) earning good wins in the 800m and 3000m, Alyson Hourihan (Cardiff) Cath Alford (Rhondda) Karen Llewellyn (Pembroke) took maximum points in the throws with Sharon Simms (Rhondda) long jumping well. So after one Match it looks as if it will take a big effort to displace Newport Men and Rhondda Ladies out of first place.
Mary would like to thank everyone who officiated and helped at this meeting and we look forward to seeing you all again at Aberdare in July.
The 3rd league fixture has been booked for Newport on 6th August, see fixture page.

On making the Welsh Masters proud in representing the GB Masters at the Interland international at Julie Rose stadium last weekend 21st June.
I am sure we would all like to wish Brian (Webb) a speedy recovery after his knee replacement operation which took place last Monday (9th). Mary & myself are hoping he will be back home by the end of this week, and thank all our friends who have phoned to ask how things are.
It is with sadness that we report the tragic death of one of our Welsh Masters members, Keith Mhyre, who was killed in an accident involving a car a short time ago. Keith was a members of Cardiff AAC for several seasons, and competed for the team in the Welsh Masters league.
We have been invited to participate in the Inter area meeting at Hemel Hemstead on August 10th. I will keep you informed of the developments as I get them.
